FreeFalling

If you’re like me, you hear a continuous soundtrack in your head.  Random sound bites bring back long forgotten song bites.  Like today.  Watching the stock market plunging, I’m inexplicably reminded of one of my favorite Tom Petty songs.  Maybe you remember it:   “And I’m freeeee ……. free fallin'!”

Not to make light of the situation, which is certainly a major catastrophe for many people, myself included.  There’s goes my retirement nest egg, as well as some of the money I had counted on to fund my fledgling consulting career.  But I’m not going to let it scare me into abandoning my dreams.  And neither should you.

While today or tomorrow or next week might not be the best time to leave an unfulfilling job and start a new venture, now is most definitely the time to set the wheels in motion toward doing just that, if that is your dream.  In fact, you may look around and find opportunity staring you in the face.  What is it that people you know could use right now (besides a few thousand point uptick in the Dow Jones Industrial Average)?  What could *you* use right now?  What changes are you planning to make because of the current state of affairs?  Are there any services you could provide to others in a similar situation?

If you’re nearing retirement, you may be thinking that you need to continue working a bit longer.  But what if your job is precarious and you may not have that option?  What could you do that would bring in some income as well as be something you’d be excited to be doing each day?  It’s never a bad time to consider your opportunities, even if you have no immediate plans to put them into action.  Inspiration doesn’t always come when expected.  Being prepared will put you in an excellent position when the time is right.

So the next time you’re freefalling, you can enjoy the ride.
