Is it Time to "Reset"?

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said yesterday in a strategy update that he believes we are in a "reset" not a "recession" of the economy.  Dictionary.com defines reset as:

2. to set back the odometer on (an auto or other vehicle) to a lower reading: a used-car dealer charged with resetting his cars.
–noun
4. the act of resetting.
5. that which is reset.
6. a plant which is replanted.
7. a device used in resetting an instrument or control mechanism.

Is it time to reset your career?  The economy is being "reset" as in the odometer example.  The stock market closed yesteday at 1997 levels.  But you can "reset" as in definition 6, "a plant that is replanted."  If you've ever moved a plant, you know it's a delicate operation.  Plants, like people, don't like to be uprooted and put in a new environment.  But sometimes it's the right thing at the right time.  Preparing yourself for change is the best way to avoid shock and thrive in a new experience.

You may have heard me mention Valerie Young and Changing Course before.  Valerie has some resources that can help you ease into and prepare for change, making a transition not only less painful, but an anticipated event within your control about which you can rejoice.

One of the first resources that I bought from Changing Course was the CD recordings of a workshop Valerie did with Barbara Winter and Barbara Sher called "Making Dreams Happen."  I listened to it with my mother as we drove across the country (from her home in Vermont to mine in Washington state).  It's a wonderful introduction to the possiblities to which you can awaken.  Valerie no longer sells the CD package, but the recordings and accompanying materials are available for download -- for a much lower price!  If you're looking to ease into charting your own course, I highly recommend that you start here.

Another great way to "get in the conversation" as Barbara Winter says, is to check out the Changing Course Club, a resource-rich online members community with monthly membership dues (and no contracts).
