Preparing for the Future
This morning on the radio I heard about a new project being spearheaded by the "left coast" states. Washington, Oregon and California want to create a "green highway" out of Interstate 5. The idea is to have alternate fuel providers at rest stops from the Canadian border to the Mexican border, so that buyers of electric, natural gas, and other non-petrol vehicles will have places to refuel. It's a catch-22 that must be addressed if we are to move forward in reducing gas consumption. Consumers are unlikely to embrace alternate-fuel vehicles if they can't fill them up with whatever powers them, and producers are unlikely to produce something that consumers are unlikely to buy. Somebody has to move first.
Not surprisingly, gas station owners and oil companies are opposed to this initiative. Isn't that how Detroit got in the trouble it's in, protesting fuel economy standards and building bigger and bigger gas guzzlers instead of embracing the trend and emerging as a leader in fuel efficiency? Wouldn't it be smarter of these gas station owners and oil companies to add these types of refueling options to their own businesses? The writing is on the wall for petroleum, and despite the resistance (and the lower gas prices), eventually we're going to have to find another way.
It's human nature to resist change. Industries especially will spend millions, if not billions, to fight regulations and new technologies so they don't lose their market share. But eventually, things go the way they will go, and if we don't embrace change, we end up being left behind. Think about the horse-drawn carriage makers who didn't take the automobile seriously.
Are you resisting change in your own life and career? Embracing change leads to opportunity. Environmental consciousness is a trend that's exploding, whether we believe in global warming (climate change) or not. What's happening in your industry that may change it forever? Open your mind and prepare for the future to survive and thrive!
